Final Design

This was my final design but during the manufacturing process, I struggled to get my seams to lie flat under the silk screen so decided not to print over the top half of my dress as not only would I have had the issue if the seams but I also had to take into consideration the darts.

This was originally my development design but during the design process I decided to use this as my final design as it meant the printing process became easier and quicker with less worry about ensuring seams and darts were flat.

Development Designs

These designs use some of the surface decoration techniques from my samples that I think are effective and enjoy using. They also experimented with a variety of neckline and sleeve styles.

Samples

This is an example of foil printing. You use a silk screen to put the glue onto the fabric, wait for this to dry before placing the foil over the glue and pressing. You then peel away the backing of the foil and are left with your foil print.

This is an example of foil printing with a variety of scrap pieces of foil. I think this look is effective.

This is an example of foil printing over screen printing. I think this would have been more effective if I'd used a different colour dye to screen print.
I screen printed a graduation in shades of blue. I think the graduation of shades is effective but the blue has a cold feel to it and I want my dress to represent a warm summers evening. To screen print dies are forced through a silk screen.

I used the sunset colours from my inspirational image in this screen print and think it worked really effectively.

Using hand embroidery I copied one of my images off my mood board.

I hand painted my tree with fabric paints and although I think this came out really well, I thought this would be too time consuming for my final design

I made my own felt using traditional felting methods of robbing wool  with warm soapy water. Here , I had backed it with a mesh fabric but this didn't offer me the look I wanted for my final design.
I created my own felt but between layers added items to it such as the gold star sequins and fancy wools to give it texture. This looks good but I didn't find an appropriate place to use it in my final design, especially as it was also very time consuming.

I tried to recreate another of the images off my mood board  with beading, the darker blue beads are glues and the silver ones are hand sewn, this doesn't look as good as I'd hoped

My Sketches

After drawing my Concept Drawings and Stylized Drawing, I experimented with some different neckline and sleeve styles to see which ones I preferred in a rough sketch before developing my designs further.

Lining

For my lining I am going to use this Polyester Satin as you wont see this through the outside of my garment due to the spray paint and I believe a funky and exciting lining makes you want to wear the garment and offers an almost secret to the garment as only the wearer sees this which will make the wearer feel good. I also believe this brings out the colourful and exciting personality of the brand.

Stylised Drawing

This is a stylised drawing of my dress, I drew this after I created my concept drawings to create the mood of my dress ready to develop my design. To create my stylise drawing I  first chose to use a summer theme then cut out body parts from a magazine and used these to draw my style lines inside.

My Dress Narative

A girl in her mid 20s is going to a family barbecue at her parents house in the countryside, she has been living in the city and wants to show how sophisticated she has become but maintain her own unique style. She thinks local businesses should be supported as she is from a rural area and although she values ethnically sourced materials she realises that this is not always appropriate to stand out.

Accessories that I have found to go with my dress - shoes

I think this shoe will go really nicely with my dress, it is a Melissa and Vivienne Westward collaboration. This shoe is called Dragon Lady and this particular one is in the colour pearl as I think this will best go with my dress although it is available in a variety of colours.

Concept Drawings

These are my concept drawings to inspire my design process. Concept drawings are to get the shapes you like ready to start the design process. To create my concept drawings I created a stencil and used spray paint.

My Inspirational Image

This tree is the image I used for my screen print on my dress, I have chosen to take the sunset colours from the back ground and put these into my tree.
